Because the citizens of Pompeii were unprepared, thousands died and were buried under Main Idea about thirty feet of volcanic material. Archaeologists have slowly uncovered houses, public baths, and other structures, including several amphitheaters, large stadiums where residents gathered to see spectacles such as plays and gladiator fights.
