Chapter 1: All Aboard!

(1) Sally gripped her sister's hand as the train filled the small platform with clouds of steam and dust. The whistle was the loudest sound Sally had ever heard, and she wished she could put her hands over her ears. She looked down at her younger sister, Beth. The little girl was trying not to cry. Sally could see her lip quivering and the tears filling her eyes.

She wondered how different life would be in California. Their father had left them with their grandparents in Omaha while he traveled to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. She took his last letter from her pocket and read it for the hundredth time.
