Raymond ran along with the rest of the runners while being on the other side of the fence.

His actions made Squeaky realize his potential as a runner and that she can maybe 'retire' from being a runner and help coach him instead.

Toni Cade Bambara's short story "Raymond's Run," tells the story of Hazel Elizabeth Deborah "Squeaky" Parker and her older brother, Raymond who is disabled. Despite wanting to achieve everything and be the first in the races, Squeaky comes to the realization of being a bigger supporter and help for Raymond rather than focus on her own achievements.

During the race, Squeaky saw "Raymond (on the other side of the fence) with his arms down to his side and the palms tucked up behind him, running in his very own style, and it’s the first time [I] ever saw that and [I] almost stop to watch [my] brother Raymond on his first run".

This scene led Squeaky admires her brother and also realize how Raymond can also become a runner like her, and she can coach him.
