My purse is heaving with coins and my pocket is stuffed with bags (1) that will soon be carrying all sorts of intriguing trinkets and original souvenirs (2) snapped up at bargain prices. No matter
where in the world / travel, I make it my business to seek out the local market, not the market for
tourists but the authentic market, the market run by locals for locals. (3) Experience had taught
me that this was where the real treasures were to be discovered.
On an early August morning I find myself among a throng (5) of people who are making the same
pilgrimage (6) to the marketplace. Even before entering the market compound, I can feel the
anticipation fizzing in my stomach. The market itself does not disappoint; it is a feast for the
senses! [7] A gentle breeze carries the aroma of rich spices and delicate perfumes. Giant
cauldron-sized pots bubble with culinary delights in various shades of yellow and orange. Small
prints in golden frames depict some of the exotic landscapes I have witnessed during my stay and
I just can't resist purchasing my own precious masterpiece. [8] Adoringly, I place it in my bag and
carry on my mission. [9]

Read the excerpt from elie wiesel’s all rivers run to the sea. why were those trains allowed to roll unhindered into poland? why were the tracks leading to birkenau never bombed? i have put these questions to american presidents and generals and to high-ranking soviet officers. since moscow and washington knew what the killers were doing in the death camps, why was nothing done at least to slow down their “production”? that not a single allied military aircraft ever tried to destroy the rail lines converging on auschwitz remains an outrageous enigma to me. birkenau was “processing” ten thousand jews a day. stopping a single convoy for a single night—or even for just a few hours—would have prolonged so many lives. based on the paragraph, the author would most likely agree that it is best to avoid confrontation at all costs. people need to be proactive when they witness an injustice. countries should remain neutral to keep alliances strong. moscow and washington are to be blamed for the holocaust.

Read the sample student claim. if university education was made free for everyone, i would be thrilled because more people would go to college and pursue successful careers. why is this not an effective claim? check all that apply. it is a topic with two or more viewpoints. it does not contain the writer’s opinion. it is simply a personal preference or feeling. it does not present supporting evidence. it cannot be supported with logical reasons.

3one of the biggest impacts a building has on earth is the energy it uses. currently, most of the world’s energy comes from burning fossil fuels. these fuels are dirty and when they are burned they pollute the air and water. one way to burn fewer fossil fuels is to reduce the amount of electricity a building has to use. passive solar heating, which uses heat from the sun, reduces the amount of fossil fuel used to heat buildings. passive solar heating requires a south-facing wall made of glass. when sunlight shines through the wall, it is collected and used to warm the building. another way green buildings reduce their electricity use is to install other energy sources. for example, some green buildings use panels that turn energy from the sun into useable electricity. which is the best summary of paragraph 3? a) fossil fuels are dirty and pollute the air and water. most of the world's energy comes from these fuels. b) the biggest problem of buildings is that they use fuel that is dirty for heating. they need to do something to be more energy efficient. c) panels that turn energy from the sun into electricity and passive solar heating can stop the burning of fossil fuels which pollute air and water. d) since fossil fuels are dirty and pollute the air and water, other technologies that pollute less and produce energy have been developed like solar energy and green buildings.
