"This can't be happening," thought Jim as he barrelled down the field, the ball tucked under his arm and the endzone a mere five yards away. "Just a month ago I was the waterboy, dreaming of a chance to play and now this?!?!" Jim's thoughts raced through his head silently, almost unconsciously, as he dove over the line to the sound of roaring applause. As his teammates mobbed him, slapping his helmet and yelling congratulations, he thought once more, "This just can't be happening..." How does the inner dialogue of Jim's thoughts develop his character?

A) It makes him more complex, balancing his outward success with inner doubt.
B) It makes him less interesting, as it does not tell about his physical appearance
C) It makes his character sinister, planting the seeds of deceit in the reader's mind.
D) The inner dialogue does not affect the characterization of Jim at all, as it has bearing on the story.

Which line in this excerpt from the great gatsby by f. scott fitzgerald contains a simile? about half way between west egg and new york the motor-road hastily joins the railroad and runs beside it for a quarter of a mile, so as to shrink away from a certain desolate area of land. this is a valley of ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. occasionally a line of grey cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-grey men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud which screens their obscure operations from your sight.

Read the excerpt from "a defence of poetry.” poetry thus makes immortal all that is best and most beautiful in the world; it arrests the vanishing apparitions which haunt the interlunations of life, and veiling them, or in language or in form, sends them forth among mankind, bearing sweet news of kindred joy to those with whom their sisters abide—abide, because there is no portal of expression from the caverns of the spirit which they inhabit into the universe of things. poetry redeems from decay the visitations of the divinity in man. which details from the excerpt provide more information about shelley’s idea that poetry "makes immortal all that is best and most beautiful in the world”? check all that apply. arrests the vanishing apparitions which haunt the interlunations of life sends them forth among mankind, bearing sweet news to those with whom their sisters abide no portal of expression from the caverns of the spirit redeems from decay the visitations of the divinity in man
