Evolution of Money
The evolution of money is the result of a long process that started during the Stone Age. Initially, grain and cattle were used to barter,
or trade. The grain or cattle were given a certain value. That value was determined by how great a need others had for the object. Items
were valued differently across different countries. Items like salt, sugar, cocoa, and spices acted as money in certain places. Later,
because food could go bad and cattle could get sick, these items were no longer seen as a good representation for money. Food and
cattle become too inconvenient to be used for trade. Metal objects eventually replaced grain and cattle as a form of money. Small discs
of metal made trading less complicated because they could be easily carried.
