Researching and Preparing for a Group Discussion In this activity, you will think about the development of a main character in a novel or a story you have read that has been made into a film or television show. You will then compare and contrast how the book represents that character with how the television show or movie presents the character. You will also decide which version of the character you prefer.

Recall the central question of this unit: How does a person change over time? One way to think about this question is to look at literary characters and see how they change. In analyzing literature, we talk about character development, which refers to the changes and growth a character undergoes over the course of a story.

If you have notes from the writing assignments you completed for the lessons in this unit, you may use them for this activity. For example, you may have notes on the character of Alice from Alice in Wonderland.

Part A
Which book did you choose analyze? Was this novel or story adapted into a film or a television show? Also include the name of the author.

Part B
Name the main character of the story.

Part C
Write a one-paragraph summary explaining how the main character developed over the course of the written version of the story you choose.

Part D
Write a one-paragraph summary of how the main character’s development was shown in the film or television version of the story.

Part F
Construct a thesis statement that you will present in the discussion in the next task. The thesis statement should clearly state which version of the character you prefer.

Type or paste your thesis in the space provided.

Part G
Create three points that support your thesis. Your points should include specific examples from the novel you’ve chosen and specific details from the television or movie version of the story. The details from the novel can be direct quotes, summaries, or paraphrased points. A direct quote is a word-for-word repetition of the author’s words from a source, using quotation marks. Quotations should be blended into your own sentences. A summary is a brief description of the main points of a piece of text. For example, you might use a summary to tell or remind your reader about the main events that affected a character. When you paraphrase, you use your own words instead of the exact words of your source, but your wording is closer to the original text than in a summary.

Type your three supporting details in the space provided.
