One day, King Midas's farmhands brought him a satyr they'd captured, but Midas ordered it released. The satyr, a part-man, part-goat creature, granted the king a wish in
return. The king wished that everything he touched turn to gold, but it was not the bounty
Midas expected. He accidentally turned his daughter to gold, and the food he tried to eat
also turned to gold. The satyr eventually returned things to normal, and the king learned
to be grateful for all he had.
Why is the king's discovery of the foolishness of his wish an effective element of this
myth?
