On page 2, what is the effect of comparing George to Odysseus?
The World's Fair
It was 1893, and the future was all around,
confidentiy displayed at the World's
Columbian Exposition in Chicago, illinois.
George had waited longingly to visit this fair-
not just a small country fair, but THE World's
fair, full of wonders.
The reference to an adventurer shows George's
sense that he is an explorer in a strange land.
The reference to unimagined wonders describes
George's disbelief at what he is seeing.
It was hard to believe that just the day before
George had woken up in his own bed on the
quiet farm outside Chicago. A breeze had
stirred the grass, and from his window he
could see across to the paddock, where a few
horses drifted lazily across the grass.
The mention of danger indicates George's
nervousness about being at the fair.
The mention of sailing provides a contrast to
George's experience on a farm.
