writing across hundreds of years of human history. From Beowolfs Old English epic
poems to Stephen King's modern English horror tales, strong writing follows basic
rules
Here are a few. Choose one guideline from the list below that strikes you, then write
an effective paragraph explaining, and demonstrating, why that tip makes for better
writing. (If you don't know why, do some researchl)
1. Consider your audience and purpose. Write, keeping both in
mind
2. Never use a long word where a short one will do
3. If it is possible to cut a word or words out, always cut them out.

4. Never use the passive voice when you can use the active voice.
5. In general, write in shorter sentences, not longer.
6. Proofread and revise. Look stuff up when you're uncertain. In a
word, write smart
