At the close of chapter 19, Bedford has finally found the sphere. Giving up Mr. Cavor for dead, he seals the manhole and switches the Cavorite shutters closed. At this point in the story, the conflict has all but been resolved, except for the question of whether Bedford will make it back to earth.
