Some people think that promises form the basis of society or trust. But that’s simply not true.

The importance of a promise is dependent entirely upon the particular situation.

Anyone can give a promise, but it can be impossible or irrational - in which case it is not important at all.

People are emotional and sentimental, and so they promise undying love for each other. They promise to have and to hold in sickness and in health - and then divorce years later instead.

And remember, often promises are broken because of things out of everyone’s control: a train was cancelled, there was a power outage, a storm, illness, whatever.

At the end of the day, the sad fact is that most promises are broken.

But the significance of the promise is not diminished when it is broken because it is a snapshot of a moment in time when a declaration of intent based on sincerity and truth was given.

When a couple promise each other to stay married and in love forever - they mean it when they say it - and that matters more than keeping the promise.

I don’t want to dilute the potential of a promise to be important, I’m suggesting that care ought to be taken in giving a promise - if it is to be important, ask yourself: how easy will it be to keep?

“Promises” can be given in an attempt to persuade or convince. Because there is no sincerity or truth in this “promise”, just manipulation, it is not really a proper promise, but a form of lying. It is important, sure, but it’s not really a promise. Remember that just because someone says they promise, doesn’t mean they do.

Adults know about promises being broken and how it was meant when it was given - but children don’t know that yet. For children a promise is important.

For that reason, great care should be taken when promising anything to children; they expect the promise to be kept. So even though you really really mean and intend and want - when children are involved, try not to promise out loud, and never - ever - make promises to persuade or manipulate a child.
