"The story is called where are you going, where have you been?" 1. Find, write, and explain two examples each of Connie as a typical teen and
Arnold as strange. (This is a very basic, almost stating the obvious, Toulmin’s
practice). Please break up your answer with claim, evidence, explanation,
evidence, explanation. Since I only ask for two (there are probably ten!),
choose the best evidences.
2. Stories (print or media) demand a dynamic character (a character that
changes) but makes use of static characters (characters that don’t change—
these are usually minor characters). Argue in a short paragraph whether
Connie or Arnold are dynamic characters. This is a mini-character analysis.
Use at least one textual evidence and explanation. Try to weave in textual
evidence into your summary rather than just dropping it into your writing as
a quote.
3. Motif is a repeated pattern in (anything—I think the term might be used in
conjunction with tapestries or other artwork) but is a literary term as well. In
this story, there is a repeated pattern or motif of: music, religion, breathing,
and flies. Mark them as you read, reproduce a list of evidences for two of the
given motifs, then underneath your list of evidences, explain what the motif
may be adding to the story.

What if the author had used “looked at” instead? punishment would be deemphasized. punishments would be seen as less harsh. the meaning wouldn't change.
