People have wondered about the Moon since they have roamed our planet. Some of the greatest scientific minds have debated different theories about how this heavenly body came to be. Although most hypotheses have been disproved, the impact theory seems to be the most logical explanation for the Moon’s existence.

The impact theory states that the Moon was created about 4.5 billion years ago. Many scientists believe that a large body (about the size of Mars) entered into Earth’s path and hit our planet. The resulting debris from both bodies orbited Earth and eventually collected to form a single solid satellite—the Moon.
