Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 as the first national park in the United States. It spans across areas in
Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Yellowstone is extremely special
and famous, because it is located on a dormant volcano. This
volcano has the largest number of hot springs and geysers in the
world. Yellowstone has more than 300 geysers. Geysers are
springs where boiling water and steam shoot out at various
points throughout the day.
Because Yellowstone is on a volcano, the magma heats the
water trapped under Earths' surface. Eventually, the heat and
pressure cause the geyser to erupt and send hot water shooting
up out of the earth. The water can reach up to 184 feet in the air!
Yellowstone National Parks most famous geyser is named Old
Faithful. Old Faithful erupts every 35-120 minutes, and it can
last for a full 5 minutes! People from around the world gather
throughout the year to see this incredible natural wonder.
