Directions for your Reader Response paragraph: Complete a Reader Response critique for something you have encountered in 1984 (this could be a character, a ritual, a rule, a passage/statement). The following questions may be used as a starting point in creating your response. Do not answer all of these questions in your submitted response; however, you should consider how you would answer each one as a means to choose which question would elicit the strongest written discussion.
Reflect on ways your experiences, attitudes, and values as a reader contribute to your understanding of 1984. In what ways are you making connections with the text?
How much do the events that have occurred thus far in 1984 agree or clash with your view of the world, and what you consider right and wrong?
How much were your views and opinions challenged or changed by this text?
How well does the text address things that you, personally, care about and consider important to the world?

Example:

After reading Part One of George Orwell’s 1984, my perspective on the amount of privacy a citizen deserves is challenged. I have always believed that the use of surveillance cameras and devices that can track what a person is doing has only been used to help society. For example, cameras may be used to catch a criminal who broke into a store and stole multiple items, or maybe a phone can be tapped to catch a person cheating on a significant other. These seem like positive reasons to have a certain lack of privacy; however, this similar lack of privacy seen in 1984 certainly puts my thoughts about it to the test. 1984’s society contains similar devices that track every person’s move, but they are not used in a positive manner. The narrator states, “...” (Orwell 18). It is here you would finish your response by explaining how that piece of evidence connects back to your claim. Take time to explain your rationale in the reasoning.
