Make a list of ten people you want to test the Serial Position Effect on. Use this sheet to record the names and data you collect.
Prepare yourself to say this phrase:
"I am doing an experiment on lists for school. I am going to read a list of words to you. I want you to listen to the words. When I am finished, I want you to write down as many of the words as you remember, in the order in which you heard them. You will have thirty seconds to write them down."
Note: The key here is to not give away the fact that you're testing the person's memory. When people find out you're testing their memory, they'll try extra hard to remember. It might mess up your results. That's why you just need to tell your ten test subjects that you're experimenting with a list. Later, you'll tell them you're testing their memory. But not now.

Give a piece of paper and a pencil to the people you're testing.
Say the phrase:
" I am doing an experiment on lists for school. I am going to read a list of words to you. I want you to listen to the words. When I am finished, I want you to write down as many of the words as you remember, in the order in which you heard them. You will have thirty seconds to write them down."
Read your list of words to your person.
Don't read too fast.
Have the person write down the words he/she remembers, in the order heard.
You may count to thirty in you head, or use a watch. But tell the person to stop writing at the end of thirty seconds.
Collect the paper.
Thank the person for their time, and let them know you'll use their paper to analyze if people are more likely to remember the beginning and ending words of a list.

Read the excerpt from ernest hemingway’s “soldier's home.” his father was in the real estate business and always wanted the car to be at his command when he required it to take clients out into the country to show them a piece of farm property. the car always stood outside the first national bank building where his father had an office on the second floor. now, after the war, it was still the same car. nothing was changed in the town except that the young girls had grown up. how does hemingway’s description of the town as unchanged impact the readers’ perception of krebs? it emphasizes that while the town has remained the same, krebs has changed. it illustrates that krebs despises the town he grew up in because it is boring. it demonstrates that krebs views himself as similar to the other soldiers from his town. it reveals that krebs is jealous of those who were able to stay in town and avoid the war.

Read the passage from a raisin in the sun. mama: lord have mercy, baby. you done gone and bought your grandmother a hat? travis (very proud): open it! she does and lifts out an elaborate, but very elaborate, wide gardening hat, and all the adults break up at the sight of it. ruth: travis, honey, what is that? travis (who thinks it is beautiful and appropriate): it's a gardening hat! like the ladies always have on in the magazines when they work in their gardens. beneatha (giggling fiercely): travis—we were trying to make mama mrs. miniver—not scarlett o'hara! mama (indignantly): what's the matter with you all! this here is a beautiful hat! (absurdly.) i always wanted me one just like it! which word or phrase from the text best supports the idea that the adults think the hat is inappropriate? “have mercy” (giggling fiercely) (indignantly) “what’s the matter”
