The day was sunny but cool. Ernie kicked the leaves on the sidewalk as he walked home from the gym. Frowning, he kept replaying the game in his mind. For just a couple of seconds, he had let his guard down, and his opponent had taken advantage of the lapse to toss a long one right through the hoop. His opponent had moved his team ahead, and Ernie’s team had fallen farther and farther behind after that. Not that Ernie was playing by then. After his terrible lapse, Coach had benched him for the rest of the game. Ernie sighed. If he didn’t improve his concentration, he might not even get to play next time. He resolved to practice doubly hard all week.
