There are three stages of a baby’s development inside the mother’s womb: blastocyst, embryo, and fetus. Here are some things that you should know about each stage.

Blastocyst
During the first stage of development, the baby is referred to as a blastocyst. During this phase, the mother’s body is preparing to care for the baby for the next few months. The blastocyst will begin to receive oxygen and nutrients from its mother.

Embryo
In the next stage, the baby is referred to as an embryo. During this phase, the baby will develop many organs, such as the liver and kidneys. The heart will begin pumping as the blood vessels develop. This phase is important to the baby’s development. Drugs, radiation, and other things can harm the baby if the mother is exposed during this stage of development.

Fetus
By the mother’s tenth week of pregnancy, the baby is considered a fetus. By 14 weeks, an ultrasound can help identify if the fetus is a boy or girl. Although the fetus will continue to grow and develop, the baby could be delivered any time after 24 weeks.
