it means the suffering and pain comes later. i dont think ppl regret their choices while they are fighting, do they?  the pain and suffering comes after you realise the damage that has been done. the ruined land, the dead family members, all that and more. after all that has washed over them they finally understand the damage they have done and that they shouldve talked it out or in another way.
