In at least one hundred words, describe the narrator’s psychological descent in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat.” Use information from the text to support your answer.

Dave's desire to escape slavery greatly reflects the African-American desire to escape oppression and poverty. Dave is struggling to declare his identity with the occurrence of the rural south in his place. Throughout the story, Dave is very irritated because of the way he is being treated by whites and how he basically has no freedom. His search for adulthood is exactly how most African-Americans felt and acted during that time. Dave also gets so fed up that he wants to actually fight back which is how all the other African-Americans felt too. Desperation is a major theme in the story as Dave is desperate to experience his adulthood, and African-Americans are desperate to escape poverty.

                In my opinion Poe's use of a first person narrator made "The Black Cat" much more interesting to read. To me it's more interesting because when the first person point of view is used it gives the illusion that you're actually there and apart of the story experiencing what the protagonist is experiencing.  In this story, you get the chance to see through the eyes of a mad man and walk in his shoes. Certain scenes and details can be seen in a more vivid image in your mind when you use first person, while it also comes with its downsides. For example, in first person you never really know what's going to happen next where as with third person omniscient you get the chance to be all seeing and all knowing. An example of a scene which was better experienced in first person to experience was when he started to mistreat his pets after he got a drinking problem, not only is it interesting to see from the eyes of an alcoholic and a not so good but more gruesome experience would be when he cut out one of Pluto's eyes. Another scene that would've seemed nice to experience would be when he found a new black cat that reminded him of Pluto. It would be nice to feel and know what emotions he was feeling first hand when he saw that cat. And lastly, the first person point of view makes the scene of him axing his wife and hiding her away way more interesting, because people never experience something like that.
