In Act I, Scene 1 of The Diary of Anne Frank, Otto Frank has returned to the Secret Annex where he and his family hid during the Holocaust. In your journal, begin a K-W-L chart about the Holocaust. A K-W-L chart can help you organize your thoughts before and after reading a work of literature. In the "K" section, write three to five things you KNOW about the Holocaust. In the "W" section, write three to five things you WANT to know about the Holocaust. Leave the "L" section blank, to be filled in after you have read the entire play. Your responses should be in clear, complete sentences. Print out the following chart, or use it as a model in your journal.

Know:

- In the Holocaust, Jews were persecuted by Nazi Germany

- Jews in Germany often hid in the homes of people who were willing to provide them shelter after it was too dangerous to try to escape the country

- During the Holocaust, food and necessities were rationed strictly

- Jews who were discovered had been taken to concentration camps where they were tortured and killed

- Families harboring Jews were also taken to concentration camps too. Sometimes they were killed immediately when they were discovered.

And then, for the Want To Know section, you can put down anything you want to know.
