Yes, because we are learning it too and we are reading it.  ''The Odyssey'' is also a fine adventure story. Even if you know it by heart, as I do, you can enjoy the way Homer builds up suspense until the moment when Odysseus can triumph over his enemies.Now that it's back-to-school season at the malls, it's time for me to make up the syllabus for my fall-semester course in classical mythology. Last year, when I asked my students if they would like me to add or drop anything from the reading list, they requested more of what we were reading already: why not read the whole of ''The Aeneid''? Why not read all of Ovid's ''Metamorphoses''? So this year again, by popular demand, we will be reading the same old texts, all by dead white males.I could have suggested that we read stories told by writers less well known than Virgil and Ovid and Homer to break down the familiar canon of ''elite'' ancient authors. People who object to studying the classics will be quick to suppose that I'm unwilling or unable to change.But the real reason I don't put new authors on the reading list is that the old books are new enough: every year I find that the same texts can be read in challenging new ways.Take one of the oldest standbys, ''The Odyssey.'' Since antiquity it has been read as a moral tale. Only Odysseus, of all his companions, was able to survive because he learned that he should pay attention to what the gods told him.
