Internal conflict occurs when a character must make a decision, such as Rainsford's choice to participate in Zaroff's hunt or be killed outright by Ivan. Zaroff's internal conflict takes place when he decides to hunt men. He believes there is "no thrill left" in going after even big game creatures such as tigers, so he decides to hunt humans, which reduces him to a murderer.  Another example of internal conflict occurs within the mind of Rainsford himself, having to identify him self as the "hunted" and another human being as the "hunter".  

 The external conflict in "The Most Dangerous Game" is man versus man. General Zaroff hunts Rainsford tirelessly through the jungle.  This is an immediate danger that Rainsford has to deal with outside of himself. Rainsford has to outmaneuver Zaroff in order to win this uphill battle. At the end of the story the reader finds his or herself at a standstill between the two characters. Rainsford reaches Zaroff's home by crossing the river which surprises the General and Zaroff then congratulates him on his victory of survival. In this moment, it is still man vs man, Rainsford will not just leave without a fight against the man who was going to kill him.

  Another immediate threat or external conflict is the jungle itself, man versus nature.  Rainsford utilizes his skills as a navigator and hunter to avoid being trapped by Zaroff by strategically crossing over rivers, hills and dense rainforest terrain. Rainsford made use of his surroundings to create traps for the sadistic General. The Malay Mancatcher, involving a large tree falling on anyone who sets off the trigger and the Burmese Tiger Pit, where someone falls into a hole disguised with jungle brush and dirt with stakes at the bottom.
