From the inauguration of the government, women have expressed their disapproval of the inconsistencies between the nation's principles and practices. Beginning with special grievances, woman's protests soon took a larger scope. Woman had already petitioned State legislatures to change the statutes that robbed her of children, wages, and property. She then demanded that the Constitutions—both State and National—be amended as to give her a voice. She asked for a voice in the laws, a choice in the rulers, and protection in the exercise of her rights as a citizen of the United States.
