In "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris, a thematic statement would be "...the students exhibited an ease and confidence that I found intimidating. As an added discomfort, they were all young, attractive, and well-dressed, causing me to feel not unlike Pa Kettle trapped backstage after a fashion show." and the rhetorical strategy for pathos is that the main character, like others, feels very out of place in his new school at Paris while his peers (as he observes) are very well settled in and attuned to the culture in Paris.
