As Odysseus and his men are headed back home, Circe appears and gives them food as well as directions. She tells Odysseus how to avoid the temptation of the Sirens and of two routes he can take to get back after getting past the Sirens. The first one involved moving rocks and so was certain death.

The second one involved the she-monster Scylla and a Whirlpool named Charybdis. Circe then told him that he would have to sacrifice 6 of his men to be able to get past Scylla and that this was the best course to avoid danger.
