Jacques is on the fence about marrying someone after his previous marriage. However, the minute he sees Bertha, he realizes that he loves her. Since he has never experienced true love, he is confused about its true definition. He has difficultly speaking sometimes when is near Bertha. Jacques is also caring and honest. When the letter arrives that the mother is dying, he goes right away but finds it hard to comfort the mother. He is caring, but also helpless, since he cannot save the mother. When he brings the child home, he tells Bertha what has happened, showing that he is honest.
