Changing the Point of View in “Story of an Hour" Kate Chopin uses the third-person omniscient point of view in "Story of an Hour" to tell a
complete story that is not limited to one character's point of view. Rewrite the last 3 paragraphs
(18-20) using a different point of view. You can either choose third person limited (choosing the
point of view from one character), second person point of view, or first person point of view.
Your story must follow the same events that happened in the last 3 paragraphs. The only thing
that will change is which perspective the story is told.
[18] She arose at length and opened the door to her sister's importunities. There was a feverish
triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory. She clasped her
sister's waist, and together they descended the stairs. Richards stood waiting for them at the bottom.
[19] Someone was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallard who entered, a little
travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and umbrella. He had been far from the scene of the
accident, and did not even know there had been one. He stood amazed at Josephine's piercing cry; at
Richards' quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife.
[20] When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease-of the joy that kills.
In the box below, rewrite the above paragraphs from a different character's perspective, or a
different point of view. The events in the story must remain the same, the only thing that will
change is the perspective that the story is told.
