In 1938 "The Great Speckled Bird" by Roy Acuff was the first song with lyrics to be performed on the Grand Ole Opry. Up until this time instrumental music was considered "pure" country. But, Acuff introduced lyrics with religious wholesome themes that opened the door to country singers to perform on the Opry. Once vocalists were allowed to perform on the Opry using religious themes, the door was open to moral, or righteous lyrics and eventually the secular songs that dominate the radio waves today. Listen to the lyrics of the "Great Speckled Bird" and identify what Roy Acuff's "Great Speckled Bird" was a metaphor for?
