These lines contribute to Beowulf's characterization as an epic hero because they reveal that he is not only daring and strong, but also eloquent.

Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that in these lines Beowulf is addressing King Hrothgar of Denmark at his mead-hall, and stressing what a great man he is, before letting him know how his supreme abilities will help him to defeat the horrible devil Grendel—which has stricken fear throughout Hrothgar’s kingdom for years. Beowulf is not only a hero, with an armor that seems to be part of his flesh, but an epic hero, and that is why he is an articulate speaker who can persuade the king to accept him, "dared as a young man," and his small company of men, to fight Grendel.
