What is the cultural significance of the totem pole?
A totem pole or monumental pole is a tall structure created by Northwest Coast Indigenous peoples that showcases a nation’s, family’s or individual’s history and displays their rights to certain territories, songs, dances and other aspects of their culture. Totem poles can also be used as memorials and to tell stories.
Why do you think this is so important to Native American Tribes?
I do think that totem poles are important to Native American Tribes because they are able to express themselves with their artwork carved into totem poles.
What significance do they hold for the members of the tribes?
Totem poles carry a diverse range of meanings in the Native American culture. For some Indians, totem poles symbolize the events of the family or ancestors. Some poles are made to commemorate the shared legacy or history of a tribe.
