Does it take effort to be a good writer and why?

Is it hard to be a writer is what you should be asking. I know this will sound a bit strange, but I look back on my early days of writing and can tell you that you have to develop a degree of intimacy with what you write. You become dedicated to the words you put down, and you must do this all the time. Not just every day you must write X amount of words. You must be observant of things every chance you get, at one point having the discipline to write it into a notebook, the way you’d walk in the door at night and grab a cold soda pop, sit down at your keyboard, and do the equivalent of saying “Honey, I can’t wait to tell you what I saw/heard today.” And eventually, some of those anecdotes will find their way into what you write.

I was never a good writer until I learned enough to fall in love with the words. To be a good writer, you have to find the right voice, it cannot be stilted or absurd. You’ll know when you find it, because you will. No one gets it right away, but it is the first real step to becoming a good writer. Voice isn’t just words, it is rhythm, it is feeling.

All the rest comes after, the expansion of events and ideas that you want your reader to think about. You and your words need to be partners.
