"In early summer, the pastures are green and speckled with yellow buttercups." The way the author describes what the land looks like in summer gives a somewhat farmland-like comparison. Instead of the mauve and white flowers, the author now hones in on the yellow buttercups only.

"But now, the sun has flattened the land into submission, turning the greens into brown. ...yet somehow an inhospitable one..., a place of secrets, one that has seen too much and concealed too much to be at peace with itself." The author now personifies the land and seems to give it a humanlike trait by calling it a place of secrets and one that is not at peace with its being. The author now has retracted from the comparison of the seasons and doesn't mention them altogether. It also reminds the reader of the sunset being more powerful than the seasons themselves and the reader could make an inference that once everything goes dark it loses its beauty and instead becomes scary.
