When they are separated, the novel follows the remarkable journey of the horse as he moves through the war, transforming the lives of those he meets, the British battalions, German soldiers, a French farmer and his granddaughter named “Emilie. The novel arrives at its most emotional moment in the story, Joey discovering himself injured and alone in “No-man’s-land,” he is found by the British and is taken to their vet canvas. There, Joey is reunited with Albert, who has enlisted in the military as a veterinarian to find Joey. Albert nurses Joey back to shape. The war finishes. However, they placed Joey up for auction, but Emilie’s Grandpa shows up and wins the auction for Joey. Emilie has died, so Emilie’s Grandpa gives Joey to Albert. Albert takes Joey back to England, married his beloved Maisie Brown, and they lived harmoniously together.
