Focus: Focus is one element that keeps a story—any piece of writing—on track, that provides cohesion as well as direction. Focus directs not only readers but characters and plot. Focus tells everyone what's important. It also tells readers what isn't important, what can be ignored.

Use of detail: Good stories use detail. Stories built on important or interesting themes supported by small but revealing detail are more complete because they give the reader more to grab on to.

Use of language: Another way to phrase the question might be “How does the author's use of language help her convey what she’s trying to say?”  Think about emotions characters feel and emotions you feel while reading. What word choices does the author make? Are the sentences long or short, complicated or simple? Is the vocabulary fancy or slang?  How does the character's way of speaking show their personality?  Look for  figurative language such as alliteration, onomatopeia, metaphors similes, hyperbole. Look for repetition.  Think about the ideas the author wants to express. The mood he wants to create.

Tone:  Tone, in a piece of literature, decides how the readers read a literary piece and how they should feel while they are reading it. It stimulates the readers to read a piece of literature as a serious, comical, spectacular or distressing.

Message: A story's message, or theme, is what the author wants to teach you through his or her writing. Some stories have a specific kind of message called a moral, or a life lesson. You can find the message of a story by looking at the characters' actions and focusing on what is repeated throughout the story.
