Read Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar in your Literature book beginning on page 893.
Prompt: Many literary critics consider Brutus a tragic hero. In this essay you will need to define the literary term tragic hero. Then consider his positive attributes, his flaws and his role in the play and decide if you agree or disagree with this conclusion. Discuss why or why not. What do you feel Shakespeare’s larger message in relation to Brutus and his role in the play? Is there another character in the play that is a better example of a tragic hero?
Prewriting (5 points): Brainstorm a list of the traits (positive and negative) of Brutus.
Essay (95 points): Your essay should begin with the definition and your explanation of a tragic hero. You should also use the introduction to state whether Brutus represents this idea. Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 should explain the 3 reasons why you agree or disagree with the literary critics that refer to Brutus as a tragic hero. Be sure to use evidence from the text to support your ideas. Paragraph 5 is your conclusion and should restate your point, you can also use this paragraph as an opportunity to identify any other characters in the play that might represent a tragic hero more accurately.
