A Yin to Win? by Srin Patak, Sun Valley High News reporter [1] Make no mistake, the upcoming election for class officers is today's hot topic. Walking down the hallowed halls of Sun Valley High, one hears whispers of possible election results. And what do those whispers say? Seems the word is “Yin will win.” I met with candidate Michael Yin to discuss his campaign. [2] Patak: How has the campaign been going over the past few weeks? [3] Yin: Amazingly well. I've got great people on my team making flyers, distributing buttons, urging students to vote. I'm feeling fairly confident. [4] Patak: You must be. I've heard some pretty positive rumors. [5] Yin: I'm just trying to keep working until the end. It's tempting to slow down. If you listen to the hype, you feel like you don't have to keep up the momentum. But I keep telling myself it isn't over until the last vote is counted. [6] Patak: I understand. You do seem to have an advantage over your opponent. After all, you're the third one in your family to run for student office. Your sister Amanda was one of the best class presidents Sun Valley High has ever had. [7] Yin: She has helped me tremendously—I can only hope to be as good a leader as she was. [8] Patak: What do you think of Cassie Mankowicz? She's running a pretty good campaign, but she doesn't have the history here that you do. Your achievements at Sun Valley High are vast: J. V. quarterback, school photographer, Student Council Vice President. [9] Yin: I've toiled long and hard, but I owe a lot to my family. They've supported me all the way. [10] Patak: Your family has contributed so much to our school. Ever since I can remember, your mom and dad have attended all of the football games and chaperoned the school dances. You are one lucky guy, you know that? [11] Yin: Thanks, Srin. [12] Patak: No problem, my friend. Best of luck next week. I'll be pulling for you on election day! What feeling is implied by the word hallowed in paragraph 1? A. delight B. arrogance C. pride D. snobbery
