The Three Sisters and the Troll
In the deepest part of the forest lived a little old man and his three daughters. The oldest daughter loved to read; the middle daughter loved to
sew; and the youngest daughter loved to explore the woods around their cottage.
One day, the oldest daughter asked her father for a new book to read. The middle daughter asked for thread. The youngest daughter asked for
a basket to carry the things she found on her explorations. The father agreed to walk into town to buy the things that his daughters needed. He
put on his cloak and his hat, kissed each daughter on the forehead, and told them to stay inside. Before leaving, he reminded them not to
answer the door to strangers.
A hungry troll watched as the father left. As soon as he was out of sight, the troll knocked on the door. The sisters thought it was their father
returning for something he forgot. They opened the door and came face-to-face with the troll. The troll lunged at the girls and tied them
together. Then he filled a pot with water and started adding herbs and vegetables stored in the cottage. He was going to cook the girls into a
stew. As he threw in the last vegetable, the water started to boil.
The oldest girl whispered to her sisters that she had a plan. She had read that onions could freeze a troll in his tracks. She tricked the trollinto
taking an onion from the cupboard by saying it was a delicious yellow apple. He greedily grabbed it and was frozen in place. The middle sister
figured out how to untie the ropes around them. She used them to sew the troll into a trap.
When their father returned, he was surprised to see the frozen troll sitting in the room. The youngest sister led them to a small cave far from
their cottage, where they could leave the troll. The girls and their father returned home to enjoy their new books, new thread, and new basket.
And the troll never bothered them again.
