Or had we? 2With a single-minded intensity, Captain Nessus stamped out the last bit of burning sail that had drifted onto the deck. To me, from the look in his eyes, it was more like he was crushing an entire city beneath his foot. Turning back to the water, but still keeping watch on the captain from the corner of my eye, I sadly observed the last remaining yards of our enemy's ship quietly slip into the sea. 3As privateers, our ship, The Deianira, was hired by the American government to help attack enemy British sea vessels during the Revolutionary War. Our survival depended on the ships we captured and the payment we received in exchange. A ship at the bottom of the ocean did us no good. 4“She had too clear a shot,” the Captain said, staring any direction but toward the ripples left by our prey, The Hercules. “An excellent prize, but it wouldn't have benefited us much if we were sunk.” 5I had spent most of my life traveling the ocean aboard ships, but that was not half as much as the time spent by Captain Nessus in the embrace of our harsh mistress. His experience in war, which was much greater than my own, also should be mentioned. He was single-handedly responsible for the destruction of more ships in his lifetime than I had seen docked at port in my own. 6“Yes. Yes, of course, sir,” I said. 7With an ungloved hand, the captain carefully brushed some embers off the leather boot he kept strapped onto his wooden stump of a leg. The glowing ashes seemed to disappear at the touch of his scarred skin. Then, as though the captain could sense what I was thinking, he spoke again. “Sometimes, we don't have a choice.” 8I nodded in agreement. “Aye, sir,” I repeated, trying to sound more convincing. 9But even now, when I think back to The Hercules and how she had not managed to fire a single cannon before we had pounced upon her, I cannot help but wonder—was it “we” who didn't have a choice, or was it Captain Nessus?
