Chapter 4--Cassie makes the observation that Stacey is “aloof and had little to do with” Mr. Morrison” (p. 58). This is because Papa told Stacey when he left to work on the railroad that Stacey needed to be the “man of the house.” Stacey is upset that Mr. Morrison is staying with them because that seems to mean that now Mr. Morrison is the “man of the house” while Papa is away. What happens in chapter four that causes Stacey to be more friendly to Mr. Morrison? “[Stacey’s] eyes met Mr. Morrison’s and the two of them smiled...the distance between them fading” (p. 66).
