The Chinese have been writing history books for a long time. We know more about China's past than about the history of any other society on earth. Yet each year produces stunning archeological finds that are adding to what we know. The new information is illuminating areas neglected by traditional historians of China. Court historians, who were hired to write top-down chronicles about emperors, ministers, and generals, almost totally ignoring ordinary men and women, non-Chinese minorities, and economic and social changes that defied Chinese norms in Chinese history.
