The Bird wants to demonstrate his power to Louie and the other POWs.
The Bird admired Louie’s reputation and wants to befriend him.
The Bird only reacts to Louie when Louie is disrespectful, and when he is, the Bird beats him.
The Bird obviously has some deep rooted insecurities that he took out on Louie.
