Earth's atmosphere helps to regulate the planet's temperature. In most places on Earth, temperatures fall between 60° and 80° Fahrenheit (16° and 27° Celsius). The planet Mercury, however, is a different story. Mercury lacks an atmosphere. As a result, its surface can reach 1,100° Fahrenheit (593° Celsius) during the day. This is hotter than the inside of most ovens. At night, the temperature on Mercury drops to several hundred degrees below zero.
