Hurricanes form all over warm ocean waters and sometimes strike land. They have three parts: the eye,
the eye wall, and rain bands. The eye is the “hole” at the center of the storm. Winds are light in the eye,
and skies are only partly cloudy (and sometimes even clear) in this area. The eye wall is a ring of
thunderstorms swirling around the eye. The wall is where winds are strongest and rain is heaviest.
Finally, the rain bands are spiral bands of clouds, rain, and thunderstorms that extend out from a
hurricane's eye wall. These bands stretch for hundreds of miles and sometimes contain tornadoes.
