According to Maori Mythology, the children of Ranginui (the sky father) and Papatūānuku (the earth mother) wished to separate their parents so that light could come into the world. However, Tāwhirimātea, the god of wind and storms, did not agree.

When his brothers finally separated his parents, Tāwhirimātea went with his father and sought revenge. His fight with his brothers caused a great amount of natural phenomena, which, for the Maori, was the origin of the difficult climate they lived in.
