"One Saturday afternoon Corina noticed dark clouds gathering in the sky above her house. Her mother and father told her that a thunderstorm was
rolling in. Just then, the wind started to blow and the rain started to fall. Corina sat on her living room couch and watched the storm through the window. The rain rattled the window panes. The wind was so strong that it blew chairs right off the front porch.
2 Corina hid under a big blanket. As she watched the storm, she noticed that it was getting worse. She saw lightning flashing across the sky as the
thunder rumbled loudly. Corina watched the wind bend the cherry tree in her yard. Just then, a strong wind seemed to almost flatten the tree against
the ground. Corina jumped up, gripping the blanket. She saw the small tree fall completely over. Its sticks and leaves scattered across the grass.
Corina frowned.
The next day, Corina and her parents went outside to clean the mess in the yard. Corina walked over to the old cherry tree. She remembered how it
grew flowers in the spring and fruit in summer. She sighed and looked down at her feet. Corina 's mother put an arm around her. "Don't worry, Corina," she said. "Once we clean up the yard, we'll plant a new tree."
4 Corina perked up at this news. She was eager to plant the new tree. She helped her parents clean up the yard. They made a place for the new tree.
They were all very hot and tired by the time they finished cleaning. However, after a few hours the yard looked beautiful once again.
5 Finally, it was time to plant the new tree. Corina and her father dug a hole for the tree. Later that day, her father brought home a tiny cherry tree,
To Corina, it looked more like a twig than a tree.
6 Why did you get such a small tree?" asked Corina.
7 Her dad replied, "You can't plant fully grown trees, Corina. You have to plant them when they are small and then let them grow. The tree must
settle its roots into the ground."
8 Corina frowned. She knew such a small tree would not grow cherries for a few years. Her father saw her frown and said, "Don't worry. This tree will
grow big and strong someday. Then it will give lots of cherries for us to eat. We must be patient and wait for that to happen.
Corina knew her father was right. She started to get excited. She knew that she would be able to watch the tree grow larger each year.
