Teachers who were concerned about students’ safety or who disapproved of their playing hooky tried to bar classroom doors. "A number of teachers told us we were wrong,” Arnetta said, "that we were breaking laws, and we were putting our parents’ jobs in jeopardy.” But, her favorite teachers, Miss Woolfolk and Mrs. Cleopatra Goree, turned around and looked at the blackboard as if they didn’t notice the students leaving their classrooms.
