Starting from the 8th - 9th Century, an unknown incident occurred that shook the civilization of Maya to its very foundations.This led to the abandonment of their classic cities in the Southern lowlands.

In the A.D 900, the civilization of Maya had collapsed. None seem to know the cause of the mysterious decline and collapse.

There were speculations and assumptions about the cause of the mysterious collapse the Maya Empire. Some believe the Maya exhausted the environmental space that they could no longer sustain a very large population. While some argued that the empire was faced with constant warfare among competing city-states.

With no concrete evidence, there may be possilibities that such decline was as a result of their belief system. This can be drawn from some clues from their paintings, pottery and few writings in form of deciphered hieroglyphs.

The collapse of the Maya civilization has been seen as one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the ancient world.
