The beach is already crowded with people, umbrellas, inflatable rafts, etc. Being so crammed already makes the beach a limited experience. For that reason, there will be no problem with installing wind turbines at the distance, on the horizon line. They will not subtract from the experience at all.

At this point in the essay, the author is talking to Jim Gordon, the president of Cape Wind. They are discussing the installation of wind turbines in the ocean.

People worry that doing such a thing will be comparable to installing the turbines in the Grand Canyon. That is, they worry the view and the experience will be spoiled.

Gordon explains that that shall not be the case. The beach, according to him, is already limited enough as an experience. It is crammed and noisy, and people are not really there to enjoy the scenery.

He also explains that the turbines will be so distant that they will not look bigger than his thumb. Therefore, they will not spoil the experience at all.

Jim Gordon's philosophy is to input less and get more.

According to him, the beach was already limited enough because there was nothing spectacular in the activities he observed. In addition, he saw no possiblity of the wind tubines reducing the experience of those who used the beach for recreational purposes.
